About this Artwork
It is 4am in the jungle of Huasteca Potosina, and nearly 30 dancers and I, guided by their dance director Maca, make our way up the mountain to the famous castle garden of surrealist artist Edward James in Xilitla, Mexico. I've been here before - in fact 3 times - attempting to create art to no avail. Gaining permissions for this property proved very difficult, even with local friends. To our avail, Maca's community were influential in the region and had finally secured us the proper permit. Even so, we arrived at 4:30 am - aiming to catch pre-sunrise light - only to be told "no" another time.
We were determined to achieve this photograph, so everyone in our company began calling their parents - governors, cultural directors - the kind of people who could get us past the guards. In a frenzy of panic, we suddenly heard "I GOT HIM"! One of the dancers had contacted her father, a government official able to grant us access. With a shrug, the guard let us through the gates.
With less than 10 minutes to spare, we jumped into action - composing and choreographing the dancers into the different levels of the castle - and CLICK, this photograph was achieved. You can see the sunrise light starting to grace the mountain behind the castle, while still leaving the light on the structure soft and flattering to the dancers. 5 minutes later the light became harsh on the structure - we had achieved the goal just in time!
I hope this photograph inspires you to dream big when you view it in your space.
